Philadelphia: H. C. Carey & I. Lea, c. 1826. Aquatint engraved and hand-colored by J. Hill (475 x 625 mm). Framed. Provenance: Martin P. Snyder. "The Fairmount Water Works were completed in 1822 as a means of supplying pure Schuykill River water to the city … The Water Works was to become the most popular subject in Philadelphia engraved views. Doughty, who was later receive wide recognition both in the United States and abroad, was attracted to the improvements on the Schuykill. He exhibited views of them in the 1822 and 1824 Academy of Fine Arts annual shows" (Snyder). This stunning large-format colored view followed. The print can be found listed for sale in Carey & Lea advertisements dated February 1827 as "recently published" and offered for sale at $5 "elegantly colored." very rare and desirable color view.
