Pagine 88 (di 197, manca il frontespizio sostituito da carta manoscritta, il primo fascicolo A e i fascicoli finali a partire da c. Aa1; manca inoltre c. S2, e i fascicoli T e V sono sostituiti da carte manoscritte), con 23 (di XXXVI) tavole all'acquatinta (della tavole, numerate in cifre arabe da 1-15 e poi in cifre romane da XVI-XXXVI, risultano mancanti quelle dalla XXII in poi, esclusa la XXXII). Vignette calcografiche nel testo, fregi e iniziali xilografici. Esemplare scompleto - dell'edizione originale completa in volume, dopo la comparsa in fascicoli a partire dal 1786 - di questo importante studio di archeologia sepolcrale e storia delle cerimonie funerarie nelle isole britanniche nell'epoca celtica, sassone e infine romana. Autore fu il chierico e antiquario James Douglas cui si deve anche la realizzazione delle belle tavole all'acquatinta che costituiscono l'imprescindibile corredo iconografico del testo. Folio (425x275 mm). Pagine 88 of 197, lacking title-page, quire A, fol. S2, and the last ones from fol. Aa1 onwards. Title-page and quires T and V replaced in manuscript. 23 of XXXVI aquatint plates (lacking the plates from no. XXII onwards, excepting no. XXXII ). Woodcut decorated initials and ornaments. First and rare complete edition of this important work on sepulchral archelology by the antiquarian James Douglas collecting in one volume parts appeared previously as single issues,e and illustrating a series of British, Roman, and Saxon sepulchral rites and burial places. "The relics found by Douglas in his excavations and engraved in this work were sold by his widow to Sir Richard Colt Hoare who in 1829 presented them to the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford' (DNB)". The publication is finely illustrated with aquatint plates, many of which are after Douglas. Some plates in the copy here presented are lacking, as usual in the copies recently come onto the market.
