Autograph Letter Signed (“S.A. Douglas”), 3 pp recto and verso, 4to (conjoining leaves), Manchester Center, NY, May 18, 1851, to George Nicholas Sanders, leaves creased, interior hinge reinforced with tape, mounting remnants to spine. Senator Douglas writes this letter to Sanders, who would later act as a Confederate agent in Europe and Canada during the Civil War, and was rumored to have had some involvement in the Lincoln assassination. In part: “We had a great time at Dunkirk & at Buffalo. You will see the account in the Newspapers. Send me the Herald at Chicago containing the account as I wish to see what it says & also the other papers. I have not yet seen the Letters in regard to the Public Lands published, but understand they have been copied into the review. / Things look well wherever I have been. Both sections of the Party treat me kindly. The editor of the Courier at Buffalo (the Cass paper) told me he was against the General & for me.”
