Contemporary polished calf gilt by Henry Young and Sons of Liverpool, spines gilt in compartments with red and green morocco lettering-pieces (lower cover of vol. one detached, some light rubbing). Sabin 20896. BRYCE, James (1838-1922). The American Commonwealth, London: Macmillan and Co., 1888. 3 volumes, 8° (226 x 142mm). Half titles, folding map printed in colours. Original blue cloth gilt (some light dust-soiling). With various other works of historical interest in 43 volumes including Leopold Ranke's The Ecclesiastical and Political History of the Popes of Rome ... second edition (London, 1841, 3 vols.) and Patrick Fraser Tytler's History of Scotland (Edinburgh, 1841-43, 9 vols.), all attractively-bound in calf or morocco gilt.
