DRESSER, Henry Eeles (1838-1915). A History of the Birds of Europe, including all the species inhabiting the Western Palaearctic Region . London: Taylor and Francis for the author, 1871-[1882]. 9 volumes including index (vol. I) and the supplement (vol. IX), large 4 (316 x 248mm). Additional titles, 723 lithographic plates by M. and N. Hanhart, Walter and the Mintern Brothers, after J.G. Keulemans, Jospeh Wolf, and E. Neale, 721 hand-coloured by Smith and W. Hart vol. I with an additional 140 leaves bound in comprising a selective MS index in a contemporary hand on the recto of 44 leaves, the remainder blank. (Occasional spotting to titles, text, and a few plates, some very light discolouration.) Contemporary green half morocco (extremities very lightly rubbed, small area of loss to lower cover of vol. I). A 'MAGNIFICENT TREATISE, BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED' (Wood), based on Dresser's collection of 12,000 skins, the majority of the plates by John Gerrard Keulemans. Henry Seebohm's contemporary opinion of this work is that it 'is by far the best book which has hitherto appeared on European Birds' (inscription in lot 182, Christie's, 11 November 1992).
