Known primarily for his work as a translator and publisher, Angus Davidson (1898-1980) was associated with the circle of artists, writers and intellectuals known as the Bloomsbury Group. Between 1924 and 1929 he worked as an assistant at the Hogarth Press with Leonard and Virginia Woolf. He translated the works of Alberto Moravia and Mario Praz, and wrote an innovative biography of Edward Lear that focused on his achievements as an artist. Davidson featured greatly in Duncan Grant's affections from 1922 and although the relationship faded, Davidson was to remain one of Grant's most loyal and lasting friends.
