Private John Insall joined the Army at Westminster on 1 September 1873, aged 18 years 6 months. He went to Egypt on 31 August 1882, as servant to Captain R. C. Lawrence, who served with the Mounted Infantry, but died at Alexandria on 13 October 1882 (WO 12/343 & 16/1168).
