Egypt and Sudan Medals 1882-1891 from the Collection of Jack Webb Four: Private John Gibbs 66th Foot and 1st Berkshire Regiment Afghanistan 1878-80, 1 clasp, Kandahar (B/634 Pte. J. Gibbs, 66th Foot); Kabul to Kandahar Star 1880 (B 634 Private John Gibbs 66th Foot); Egypt & Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, no clasp (41/634 Pte. J. Gibbs, 1/Berks. R.); Khedive’s Star 1882, the reverse impressed ‘634 JG 1 Bks’, mounted as worn, pitting from stars, otherwise nearly very fine (4) £600-700 Footnote John Gibbs was born at Hungerford, Berkshire, and enlisted for the 41st Brigade at Aldershot on 30 August 1877, a plasterer by trade, aged 24. Posted to the 49th Foot (1st Berkshires), he served in India with the 66th Foot (2nd Berkshires) during the Afghan War and took part in the march from Kabul to Kandahar and the battle of Kandahar. He returned to the 1st Battalion in England and served with it in Egypt from July 1882 to May 1883. His service was described as ‘indifferent’, being marked with several instances of confinement for drunkenness, breaking out of barracks and other such offences. He was discharged on 28 September 1889. Sold with copy discharge papers.
