Title: Egypt's Place in Universal History: An Historical Investigation in Five Books Author: Bunsen, Christian Karl Josias von Place: London Publisher: Longman, Brown, et al. Date: 1848-1867 Description: 5 volumes. Translated from the German by Charles H. Cottrell. With lithographed plates & maps; hieroglyphic dictionary. 22.5x13.5 cm. (8¾x5½"), original cloth. First Edtion in English. Important work including portions on Egyptian grammar and lexicon. With three-page autograph letter signed by the translator, Charles Cottrell 1850, inserted at the front of Vol. I, discussing the long delay in completing the publication of his translation, which was to take some 20 years in all. In part: "...I am glad to find that there is anybody who takes sufficient interest in it to wish for the completion, as I cannot flatter myself it has had much success with the public. I talked to Bunsen today about the continuation, the delay having been to me a matter of great annoyance, as the translation has been done of the remainder for 4 years. So many alterations, however, are necessary in the historical part that it would have been absurd to bring out a translation of the German as it now stands..." With withdran rubberstamps from Glasgow University Library, 1963, to the backs of the title-pages and a few other places. Lot Amendments Condition: Wear to covers, some joints split, covers loosening, front cover of Vol. I detached; good to very good condition. Item number: 254385
