EIKOH HOSOE
EIKOH HOSOE Barakei -- Killed by Roses . Tokyo: Shuei-sha, 1963. Folio (422 x 270mm). 43 black and white photographs, 4 colour illustrations on rice paper, 2 gatefolds. Original illustrated cloth, acetate dust-jacket, and original printed cardboard slipcase (dust-jacket with light wear, front flap corners ?clipped, slipcase rubbed at the extremities as often). Provenance : Michael Ruetz (discreet stamp on the inside of the slipcase). FIRST EDITION, signed by Hosoe and Mishima. One of the most striking and best designed Japanese photobooks, in a very good example of the slipcase which is often found in poor condition. Barakei consists of 'a series of extraordinary theatrical tableaux -- Japanese surrealism meets Italian mannerism... it has its imitators, but most of them are pale shadows of the original' ( The Photobook ).
