EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1955). Two typed letters signed (‘A. Einstein’) to Moritz Schlick, Berlin, 21 November 1919 and 27 February 1920, in German, in the first communicating his plans to travel by train (to Rostock for the award of his honorary doctorate), mentioning that Max Planck has been telegraphed because of the serious illness of his daughter, and expressing his devout hope that all will be well and they can travel together, one page, large 4to (a few very short tears at margins); in the second, he reports on strenuous efforts on his own part and that of friends including Max Planck to secure an academic post for Schlick in Zurich or elsewhere, and explains his reluctance to comment on the subject of the German ‘Clarté-gruppe’, as he has not really understood its purpose; he goes on to refer to an incident at the university which has been absurdly inflated by the newspapers (‘Mein kleiner Zwischenfall an der Universität ist von den Zeitungen unerhört aufgebauscht worden ’ ), one page, large 4to (minor wear to margins).

Moritz Schlick (1882-1936), a founding further of logical positivism and the central figure in the Vienna Circle, became closely associated with the philosophy of science from the mid-1910s, distinguishing himself in particular with a paper in 1915 on Einstein’s special theory of relativity. The Moritz Schlick Nachlass, including copies of his correspondence, forms part of the Vienna Circle Archive at the Noord-Hollands Archief in Haarlem.
