Beschreibung:

EINSTEIN, ALBERT Autograph letter signed , as "A. Einstein," single page, Schurbentz bis Lübeck, dated 26.IX.28. 11 1/4 x 9 inches (28.5 x 23 cm); about sixteen lines in German written in brown ink addressed "An die "E. E. Gruppe" zu New York"; [FRAMED WITH] Portrait of Einstein. Gelatin silver print, 8 3/8 x 6 1/2 inches (21.5 x 16.5 cm), signed in pencil by [Lotte] Jacobi, original mount with her "Atelier Jacobi" stamp (from her studio at Charlottenberg) on the verso, inscribed by Einstein on mount recto "Dem Einstein-Klub zugesignet/Albert Einstein 1928." [i.e signed for the Club"]. The letter laid down to card, the letter originally folded, with two small losses to the lower blank margin and a repaired tear to the blank upper margin, the ink somewhat faded, some lightstain to that and to the mount of the photo, which exhibits some silvering. The pair framed by an early owner, likely the recipient. An amusing and quite lengthy letter from Einstein to a group of American enthusiasts (or perhaps autograph-seekers). He suggests a motto for them "Alle suchet zu begreifen, Niemand zu verachten, Nichts blind zu glauben," [roughly "Seek to understand all, despise none, believe nothing blindly"], which is a rather apt summation of Einstein's own credo. The signed photograph is an early example of Jacobi's extensive portraiture of Einstein. C
