Elgar expresses his affection for Mackenzie who was one of the foremost musicians of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Britain: [my judgement] is strongly tinged with a warm colourable feeling of affection to Mackenzie . At this period Boult was Musical Director to the BBC and was principal conductor of the newly formed BBC Symphony Orchestra. On 9 March Boult was able to confirm that the concerto would be broadcast which it was on 19 April 1933. At Elgar's suggestion Boult wrote to Mackenzie to let him know that the piece was being revived. The letter is published in J.N.Moore, Elgar, Letters of a Lifetime , Oxford, 1990, p.462-3.
