Lewes') to the Editor of the Contemporary Review [James Thomas Knowles], The Priory, 11 February 1874 , declining to contribute to the review 'not from any want of respect', but because 'I have not now any inward vocation to write about Strauss' although she admits, 'A full survey of his career, giving the due proportion of his earlier & more energetic writings would be valuable', 2 pages, 8vo , integral blank. George Eliot's translation of Strauss's Das Leben Jesu (begun by E.R. Brabant) appeared in 1846. Knowles later founded the Ninteenth Century . Not in Haight, The George Eliot Letters .
