♡ ELWYN LYNN (1917-1997) Crossed 1968 mixed media on canvas Signed and dated verso: Elwyn Lynn Jan 1968 Inscribed verso: Elwyn Lynn / Crossed 63 x 73cm PROVENANCE: Kym Bonython Brian Seidel 1969 acquired from the above 2000 OTHER NOTES: Elwyn (Jack) Lynn (1917-1997) was an Australian artist, author, art critic, curator and teacher whose artwork is held in practically every prominent public collection in Australia including the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of NSW, Art Gallery of South Australia, Queensland Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Western Australia and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney. His artwork is immediately recognisable through the use of unconventional materials to produce rough, abstracted surfaces which evoke a sense of struggle and endurance. Heavily influenced by the work of Spanish artist Antoni Tapies, Lynn maintained his interest in texture and surface throughout his career, later experimenting with assemblage elements that echoed the work of some of the Dada artists he'd seen in Europe. In addition to his considerable achievements as a painter he was also esteemed in academic circles through his curatorship of the Power Gallery of Contemporary Art at Sydney University (1969-1983, now housed within the Museum of Contemporary Art) and his writing as art critic for The Australian, Sunday Mirror, The Weekend Australian, Art and Australia and many more. In 1975 he was awarded Membership of the Order of Australia and in 1988 he won the Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW who also mounted his comprehensive retrospective in 1991 titled "Elwyn Lynn: Metaphor and Texture". © Elwyn Lynn/Copyright Agency, 2021 Estimate $1,500-2,500 Absentee bid Telephone bid Bid on Multiple Lots Bid Live Online Request a condition report
