ELYOT, Sir Thomas (1490?-1546). The Bankette of Sapience compyled by Syr Thomas Elyot knight, and newely augmented with dyverse titles & sentences . London: Thomas Berthelet, 1545. Small 8° (132 x 87mm). Collation: A-F 8 . Architectural woodcut title border [dated 1534; McKerrow & Ferguson 30], full-page woodcut armorial on verso of title and on final leaf; later engraved portrait of Elyot bound in. (Sidenote on D2 and E4 lightly shaved; occasional light waterstaining, particularly in quire E.) 19th-century calf gilt, edges gilt. Provenance : contemporary 7-line manuscript poem on 'Faythfull Frendshipp' on verso of last leaf; Cardiff Castle bookplate. Third edition, earlier editions were 1539 and 1542. A collection of sayings and proverbs from Solomon, Seneca and other Roman philosophers and some Church Fathers. STC 7631.5, records only the Folger and the present copy, however all editions are rare.
