EMBLEMATIC BINDING.] [PLINIUS SECUNDUS, Gaius (23-79). Epistolarum . Paris: François Gueffier, 1598.] Two parts in one, 8 o (142 x 82 mm). (Lacks title and second leaf.) Contemporary French olive goatskin, richly gilt on covers with an outer gilt roll border, inner panel decorated small shell, triple dots and S fermé tools, a central gilt circular design of an open book with motto "VERITAS OMNIA VINCIT," quarter-circular emblematic designs at top and bottom of each cover, one with a cupid at center of a sun with radiant rays, the other with Mars holding a spear and shield, smooth spine gilt- and blind-tooled with floral and urn tools, gilt and gauffred edges (small wormhole on spine, some skilful restoration). Provenance : Saplairoles (early signature on rear pastedown); J. Sablayrolles de Castres (bookplate); purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 25 September 1962. The present book does not appear in Geoffrey D. Hobson's census of bindings utilizing the S fermé tool in Les reliures à la fanfare, le problème de l'Sfermé , Amsterdam, 1970, pp.85-119.
