Embroidered binding. Almanach Contenant un Recueil des Coëffures des Dames, Paris: chez l'Auteur, 1781, folding almanack at front and rear (slightly frayed to fore-edge, former with closed tears to upper left corner, crudely repaired on reverse), 12 hand-coloured plates showing ladies' hair styles, reverse of one plate and a blank page with ink stamp 'Prix Avec Privilege du Roy', close-trimmed (clipping last line of almanack and caption to first plate), all edges gilt, contemporary embroidered binding, worked in green, brown, and pink silks, metallic thread, and spangles, on a cream silk ground, spine with latticework, covers with central oval wreath, that to upper cover enclosing flaming heart and wings emblem, that to lower cover with branching flower stem, both sides with foliate stem cornerpieces, 92 x 59mm, housed in a near contemporary red morocco case with pull-off lid, front and spine a little faded, top edge slightly splitting, spine divided with gilt bands of volute roll between double lines, lettered in second compartment 'Annee Nouvee', sides with gilt border of hound's tooth roll, and pelmet roll composed of drawer handles and tulips, quatrefoil device to centre, helix roll on edges,108 x 69mm A rare almanack with engraved illustrations depicting the extravagant hairstyles of the time, with the added enhancement of a contemporary embroidered binding and almanack case. We have been unable to trace another copy of this little volume.
