The letter's publication aroused controversy in France. Zola was sued for libel, sentenced to a year in prison and forced to flee to England. He stayed in London for about a year, until allowed to return to France. Zola wrote the present letter at his home in the town of Médan, about three weeks after the beginning of the retrial of Alfred Dreyfus in the city of Rennes. [1] folded leaf, 20.5 cm. Good condition.
