♡ EMILY KAME KNGWARREYE (c. 1910-1996) Body Paint Design 1996 ochres on canvas inscribed verso with artist's name, title, and Utopia Art cat. no. EKK9623 96.5 x 85cm PROVENANCE: Utopia Art, Northern Territory (accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and a photo of the artist in creation) Leonard Joel, Melbourne, 21 June 2009, Private collection, Melbourne OTHER NOTES: Natural earth ochres are used by the people of Utopia to decorate their bodies when a corroboree is performed. Part of this design also shows the (white) application of Down or feathers, which is part of the decoration. Estimate $3,500-4,500 Condition: The work is in good condition overall. There are some minor surface marks, some inherent pigment, mostly around the edges. The white underpainting in the lower left has slowly become more visible through the black outline - a natural effect over time. Some of the ochre in the centre has diminished, as with age. The work is stretched with black tape around the side and back edges. This has likely been done for aesthetic purposes and could be removed. The opinions expressed in the condition reports are a guide only and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Prospective buyers are encouraged to inspect articles for sale at our pre-sale viewing where Leonard Joel staff are available for advice.
