ENGLISH MILLED COINS - EDWARD VII - SOVEREIGN AND HALF SOVEREIGN - BALANCE COIN SCALE 20th century AD A balance to check the weights of the English gold sovereign and half sovereign coins, incorporating slots to check thickness and recesses to check diameter, the base pierced to allow the balance to be secured to a shop counter or similar; the bar marked EDMD HEELEY & Co and the counterweight marked WARRANTED STEEL BUSH'D (for the pivot pin). 40.75 grams, 95mm long. Extremely fine. [No Reserve] Literature See Shepherd & Musham, no. 303 for a generally similar balance by the same maker. Footnotes Edmund Heeley & Co are listed as manufacturing jewellers at 24 Union Street in the Birmingham Directory, for 1835 (with James Heeley & Sons, possibly related, also listed locally as buttonmakers, corkscrew makers and snuffer makers); also in Osborne's Guide to the Grand Junction, Or Birmingham, Liverpool, and Manchester Railway for 1838 (copy of advertisement from p.37 included, wherein 'piracies' of their inventions are referred to).
