RARE, FIRST JUD TRANSLATION, second German edition, of these extracts from Luther and Erasmus on penance and confession, first published in Latin in 1503 as the 'Lucubratiunculae'. The first German edition published by Adam Petri in Basel in 1520, was soon followed by the present work newly translated by Leo Jud (1482-1542). The historiated title border appearing here for the first time is attributed to Conrad Schnitt; the small woodcut initials with animal scenes and the beautiful printer's device are after Hans Holbein Johann Heinrich Waser was a writer and translator, best known for his works on Shakespeare, Samuel Butler and Jonathan Swift; the following lot shares the same provenance.
