Translated into French by Gueudeville, with illustrations by Hans Holbein this is Erasmus's most well-known work, a biting satire which criticizes all human professions, from monks and theologians to grammarians, poets, and rhetoricians like himself. The original essay was composed in Latin in 1509 whilst Erasmus was staying with Sir Thomas More, and it quickly became one of the most notable works of the Renaissance. Not in Brunet or Cohen-de-Ricci.
