ERICH VON STROHEIM A presentation vellum scroll inscribed To Valerie and Von with our best wishes for a Joyous Xmas and a Very Happy New Year from your old friends at M.G.M....Culver City, California, Dec.25, 1934 signed by approximately fifty colleagues including Jimmy Durante, Ernst Lubitsch Clarence Brown, Rowland Brown, William Powell, George Oppenheimer and Sid Silvers, 31¾x20in.; twenty corresponding autograph and typescript letters, signed, various dates, March-December 1937, each addressed to Mrs Valerie Von Stroheim, thanking her for sending a cheque, majority expressing happiness at the news of Erich Von Stroheim's success in France - one letter from M.G.M. publicity department returning a cheque for $25.00 addressed to Clark Gable saying ...[Gable] expressed his sincerest appreciation of your thoughtfulness but urges that you forget about the matter until such time that Erich once again regains the place in the industry which he so justly deserves.. , 1p.; thirty-six corresponding cancelled cheque; an autograph draft of a letter in Erich Von Stroheim's hand, dated January 3rd, 1935 on Erich Von Stroheim headed paper regarding the Christmas fund set up by friends in the film business to help the Von Stroheim's out at a time of unemployment and financial difficulty for them ...I wish to thank you for so kindly contributing to the Xmas gift and for signing the beautiful scroll..Because of the nature of the gift, Mrs Von Stroheim and I request that we be allowed to consider it as a loan..I will repay it as soon as I am fortunate to secure employment..I must confess that I am unable at the present time, to adequately convey to you in words how much we both appreciate this heartfelt gesture... 1p.; several typescript and handwritten lists of names of contributers to the Von Stroheim Christmas Fund and amounts donated; and thirty three pages of handwritten notes of Valerie Von Stroheim's memoirs, dictated by Valerie Von Stroheim after Erich's death, probably written in another hand - giving biographical details of her life with Von Stroheim and the background circumstances to the presentation of the scroll.
