There were no gold medals, only one silver (hockey), and 4 bronzes included only one for swimming. There were demands for a public enquiry into the failure. More Government funding was essential and recommendations eventually led to the establishment of the Australian Institute of Sport and an improvement in Australian sporting standards. Ernest Joseph King was one of the great swimming coaches in Australia. Swimmers coached by him won more than 100 Australian open titles. He coached, among the champions, Rebecca Brown, Lisa Curry and Hayley Lewis. Joe King coached for five Olympic Games and was widely respected and admired. Amongst many awards he received membership of the Order of Australia and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. Sold with the lot is an inscribed visitors book presented to Joe King on his retirement in 1993 at the farewell dinner hosted by MLC Leander. The book contains circa 120 names, address, sentiments and personal messages of thanks. Among many swimmers included are Lisa Curry and Hayley Lewis. Others include Kerryn Pratt, Michael Wenden and Grant Kenny see illustration
