ESPER, Eugenius Johann Christoph (1742-1810). Die Schmetterlinge in Abbildungen nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen . Erlangen: Wolfgang Walthers, 1777-1786 [-1807]. 4 volumes and 2 supplements only, in 5, 4° ( 260 x 198mm). 372 HAND-COLOURED ENGRAVED PLATES (only, of 433) by J. C. Bock and others after Esper. (Lacking volume V, and some supplementary text and plates from vols. I and V, and plate X from vol. III, a few plates slightly cropped at outer margin, not affecting images, two quires of text in vol. IV with worm track in outer margin, not affecting text.) Uniform 19th-century green half calf, spines in compartments with red leather lettering-pieces (spines slightly faded, lightly scuffed). Provenance : Herbert Bruce (armorial bookplate). Nissen ZBI 1316; B.M. (N.H.) II, p. 541. Due to the complexity of collation, this lot is sold not subject to return. (5)
