ETHEL MERMAN COSTUME DESIGN SKETCHES FROM "CALL ME MADAM" 20th Century Fox, 1953 A group of three watercolor and pencil on board costume sketches created by Robert Carlton depicting various outfits worn by Ethel Merman in the film that garnered her a Golden Globe as well as being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design. The first piece is a pink cowgirl ensemble, the second piece is a turquoise evening gown with Merman's handwritten notation of OK E.M. penned in black ballpoint in in the lower left-hand corner and the third piece is a flowered dress with Merman's lengthy handwritten notation reading Dear Bob -- I adore this - however, I hardly ever wear green & would prefer it with another color bodice & binding. You would know better than I what color would blend in with the flower. E. M. . All sketches are signed by Carlton, have attached fabric swatches and have numerous pencilled notations around the margins. 14 inches x 11 inches (3)
