EUSTACHIUS, Bartholomaeus (ca 1505-1574). Tabulae anatomicae . Edited by Giovanni Maria Lancisi (1654-1720). Rome: Francesco Gonzaga, 1714. 2 o (378 x 256 mm). Engraved title vignette after Pier Leone Ghezzi engraved graduated scale plate, 47 full-page copperplate engravings by Giulio de' Musi after drawings by Eustachi and Pier Matteo Pini. (Some soiling to sheet edges, but generally clean and crisp.) Contemporary vellum over pasteboard (a bit soiled). Provenance : extensively annotated in a contemporary hand, and with 7 folio manuscript pages and numerous small slips with manuscript notes laid in; Herbert McLean Evans (bookplate). FIRST EDITION. This series of 47 plates was prepared in 1552 to illustrate a projected book by Eustachius (ca 1505-1574) entitled De dissensionibus ac controversiis anatomicis , which was never realized before Eustachius's death. Only the first eight copperplate engravings were published during Eustachius's lifetime, in his Opuscula anatomica . Early in the 18th-century the plates were found and brought to the attention of Giovanni Maria Lancisi, who published the full series of 47 plates along with his notes. The extensive contemporary annotations show this copy to have been studied in depth by a reader well-versed in medical thought and practice. The annotations make comparisons and references to Vesalius, Falloppius, Ruysch and others, and provide supplemental information to Eustachius's text. Choulant-Frank, pp. 200-202; Garrison-Morton 391; Norman 740; Wellcome II, p. 536.
