In its fiftieth year, this competition prepared Plus Four has spent at least 80% of its life in the hands of active sports racers. Its history as traced by the current owner places its earliest racing days to be in Holland in the early 1970s when it was owned by Michael Lucassen, although being a right hand drive example there is a good chance that it was originally delivered in the UK. After some success in Continental European races it was purchased by another Dutchman, Peter Ecury in the early 1980s. Ecury progressed the car considerably, he campaigned it extensively far and wide it the UK, Europe and even Russia and North Africa. Some measure of his ability and the car’s performance in this era can be gained from the fact that it won the 1983 FIA Benelux Historic GT Championship, and he then repeated this victory the following year en route to winning the 1984 FIA European Overall Historic GT Championship, certainly no mean feat! In 1985, the current owner discovered the car when Ecury responded to his ‘Wanted, Four Seater Morgan’ advertisement in Classic and Sportscar, his intentions had been to buy a car that would accommodate his burgeoning family of five children. Ever the salesman, Ecury’s sales pitch was that the car could easily be converted from two to four seats and so he bought it. Given the racing provenance it seemed a shame to mess with the car in its present form, so instead he opted to leave the kids at home and go racing! After several SCCA driver’s schools, the present owner took to the track later in the 1980s and has competed regularly ever since. By his own admission the car is faster than its owner, but that has never stopped him enjoying it. The ‘Old Mog’ has been frequently raced in the SCCA D.C. Region’s Middle Atlantic Road Race Series (MARRS), as well as in vintage events, accruing more than 100 race log book stamps in this country alone, which must make it one of the most raced of its breed, particularly when you add its European history to the tally. In its current 25 year tenure the car has been maintained by noted specialist Jim McHenry of Reading, PA, a former Senior Aston Martin and Penske mechanic, this has included two comprehensive engine rebuilds and a reframing roughly a decade ago after a significant ‘off’ at Fairmont Park, PA. Throughout this period, the Plus Four has been kept within the laws of the racing rule book and with a keen eye on safety. It currently runs a Toyota Supra 5 speed ‘box, which affords it the convenience of synchromesh on first, slightly longer legs on the road as well as better gas mileage, but no alteration was made to the chassis and its period Moss unit is with the car and could be returned to it should a buyer wish. In addition, the car is registered, insured, and state-inspected for road use, and the owner has driven it to work, in club events, and on vacations. It comes with full weather equipment including folding windscreen, hood, side screens, tonneau, and lighting. As presented today, this illustrious Morgan racer wears its rich history well with the occasional minor cosmetic battle scar here and there, and a well worn interior. All the while it remains absolutely ready to race and is most likely the only production car in the SCCA that carries Historic FIA GT certification. With its Lawrencetune head and throaty 42 DCOE carburetors and having just passed its 2012 SCCA Annual tech inspection, the car is ready to be used this season, offering its purchaser the opportunity to follow in some hallowed footsteps and carry the baton into its next half century.
