(Oblong 4to) 24.5x34 cm (9¾x13¼"), each volume in wrappers with color woodblock illustrations on front wrap, bound with string and loosely bound together in illustrated cloth chemise with beveled edges, title stamped in gilt. Each volume one of 190 Deluxe copies printed on Japanese paper. This copies are not numbered. Scarce Deluxe volumes of these wonderfully illustrated tales. A total of 24 (of 28) fables rendered. While the source of the tales and the publisher are French, the book is a fine expression of Japonisme that swept the Western World in the late 19th century, and is very much in the style of a Kobunsha or Hasegawa publication of the same period. Lot Amendments Condition: Wear, rubbing, and soiling to outer cloth chemise with vertical split to cloth at spine, corners worn, binding string lacking at heel of spine; each volume lacking 2 numbered leaves and their accompanying plates (Vol. 1 lacking Nos. 5 and 12, Vol. 2 lacking Nos. 5 and 14), vertical creasing to title page and preliminary leaves of each volume, all plates very good, with general toning and some finger soiling.
