. MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER. [France: early 19th century]. 2° (232 x 165mm). Title, 1-132 [133-262] pp., 9pp. explanation of the drawings, 30pp. table. 14 original drawings in black chalk and watercolour mounted, illustrating equipment and falconry scenes, the first 12 numbered and with captions, two uncaptioned plates (one loose) two leaves containing captions for opposite plate, additional notes and sketches relating to the volume on 6 guards at end; 3 letters and 4 slips with notes laid in. Contemporary sheep, later (c.1903) tan pigskin chemise with yapp edges by Gruel Engelman, Paris (small section of lower yapp edge missing, light stain at foot of spine and sides). Provenance : [Louis Bouchard-Huzard, Paris, 1880s, purchased by: -- Mr. Martin (?) -- Mr. de Busnes, mayor of Busnes] -- Alphonse de Toulouse Lautrec Monfa (gift inscription on his marriage, by his brother Charles) -- Bartolomé Josephe de Toulouse de Lautrec Monfa (armorial bookplate, family blindstamp in first 3 leaves). An apparently unpublished manuscript on falconry, written by a knowledgable amateur . Beginning with general remarks on a sport which, as he states in the introduction, is in perilous decline, the author gives practical advice on the 'chasse du vol', its equipment and technique. He adds a select bibliography of previous works with comments on their usefulness, a vocabulary of falconry terms, and original drawings illustrating the equipment and technique of the sport. The identity of the author remains firmly anonymous; Picardie is mentioned once, and the latest date occuring in the manuscript is 1784. In the opinion of Ed. Barrachin, the manuscript is 'extremement interessant et très curieux ... je n'ai jamais rien lu sur ce sujet d'authourserie complet. L'auteur pareut parfaitement posseder son sujet'. This opinion was echoed by Mr. de la Rue, a friend and fellow falconer of the previous owner, who stated that he had never read anything as good on autourserie. The manuscript was given by Charles de Toulouse Lautrec Monfa to his brother, Alphonse, on his marriage in 1903. Alphonse made concerted attempts to discover the authorship (without success) and early provenance of the album. Some of his efforts are documented in correspondence and notes laid in or inserted on guards.
