Now hailed as the “father of African-American history”, Woodson was the founder in 1926 of Negro History Week (which has now evolved into Negro History Month). In the letter in this montage, he explains the “thought behind…the now well established observance of Negro History Week”, stresses the importance of promoting the “long neglected” study of Black history, and notes that another of his creations, the first African-American publishing company in America, had made a “special provision to supply the demand for books and pictures of Negroes” during the annual event. Superb content summing up all of Woodson’s contributions to African-American culture in the early 20th century, beautifully presented for framing.
