first edition, title within woodcut decorative border, woodcut head-pieces, final few ff. frayed, loss of 1 letter of catch-word on H2, lightly browned, occasional spotting, [Oxford pp.32-33; Wing W3276], Printed for Peter Dring at the Sun in the Poultry, next door to the Rose-Tavern, 1664 bound with Woolley (Hannah) The Ladies Directory, in choice Experiments & Curiosities of Preserving in Jellies, and Candying Both Fruits & Flowers. Also, an Excellent way of making Cakes, Comfits, and Rich Court-Perfumes, second edition of the author's first book, lacking engraved frontispiece, preliminaries loose and frayed, loss of a few letters on most ff., loss of a few words on a couple of ff., E7 and F1 small section of lower corner torn away, affecting catch-word, water-stained, [Oxford pp.31-32], printed by T[homas]. M[ilbourn]. for Peter Dring, at the Sun, next dore to the Rose Taverne in the Poultry, 1662, together 2 works in 1 vol., contemporary calf, upper hinge broken, worn, 8vo *** Two rare works by one of the first British professional female cookery writers. ESTC lists only the British Library copy of The Cooks Guide and only 2 copies of the Ladies Directory (this not in the British Library). Woolley began her career in service, and went on to help run free schools with her schoolmaster husband Jerome. She gained a reputation as a very competent amateur physician.
