Majesty's Frigate Guerrière. Capt. Dacres; which terminated in the total destruction of the Enemy's Ship, after a close Action of 30 Minutes. Philadelphia: W. Strickland and W. Kneass, September 21, 1812. With descriptions of each frigate at left and right, including: "Guerrière / 49 Guns / 15 Killed & wounded 24 missing"; "Constitution / 54 Guns / 7 Killed 7 wounded." An important engraving produced only one month after the first significant frigate action of the War of 1812, which occurred south of Newfoundland on August 19, 1812. Captain Isaac Hull’s USS Constitution encountered HMS Guerrière, under the command of Captain James Dacres. During the three-hour battle, Guerrière was severely damaged, while a cannonball purportedly bounced off Constitution’s tough oak hull, which subsequently earned her the nickname “Old Ironsides.” This early victory was extremely important for American morale, and Captain Hull and his crew were hailed as national heroes as a result. Condition: Not examined outside of frame. Light central, vertical fold. Few tears along lower margin, one that extends into water, one that extends into margin and printed title. Overall attractive, strong colors.
