Very rare and early engraved, color printed piece; laid paper 8.25 x 11.25 in., plate impression 6.875 x 8.875 in. The flag appears to have room for 14 or 15 stars arranged in an oval, which would date the piece to the 1790s. On the flag is an engraved oval illustration of Mercury on a dock surrounded by cargo, holding a caduceus and anchor, with a sailing ship in the bay behind him. Below is the Perpetual Calendar, with the line Mortal! do you know a moment's value?, and below that a profile engraving of George Washington. Flag appears to have been engraved in aquatint on a separate plate. It is not apparent to us exactly how dates on the perpetual calendar are determined. Provenance: From the Estate of Kenneth Erwin, Portland, Michigan Condition: Very small scattered spots, else very good. Bottom 0.5 in. is folded back to fit in frame.
