[Flemish] DE BRUYN, Nicolaes. After Maarten de Vos "Domus Lamentationis", the house of mourning. Amsterdam, Assuerus Van Londerzeel, ca. Engraving, x 38,5 cm, laid paper, signed in the plate "M. de Vos invent / Nico de Bruyn fecit." (trimmed outside the platemark with thread margins, tear at upper left corner with sl. loss of image, sl. frayed at edges, repaired tear of cm, hardly visible in image). A Dutch interior with mourning family members over the dead body of a young man. A representation of a passage in Ecclesiastes which states that we should accept death as an essential aspect of life. This stoic attitude is embodied by the elderly man entering the homestead at the upper right. The print is dedicated to the Dutch astronomer and geographer Petrus Plancius (1552-1622). With 6 lines of engr. text in Latin. Part of an ensemble with "The house of Feast". Good impression of the 1st state (of 2). Ref. New Hollstein (De Vos), 1237.Prov. Van Loock (coll. stamp, L. 3751).
