FLORENCE 1615 -- SALVADORI, Andrea. Guerra d'Amore. Festa del Serenissimo Gran Duca di Toscana Cosimo Secondo, Fatta in Firenze in Carnevale del 1615 . Florence: Zanobi Pignoni, 1615. 4 o (202 x 136 mm). Four engraved plates by JACQUES CALLOT (plate one just shaved along right side, three with repairs at gutter and along fold affecting small section of image, some pale spotting to plates and text). Modern red morocco (some scuffs on rear cover). Provenance : purchased from Gilhofer and Ranschburg (1975). Jacques Callot's four engravings illustrate this desciption of the festivities during carneval at Florence in 1615. The director of the festivities was Giovanni del Turco, the music was composed by Jacopo Peri, Paolo Grazi and Giovanni Battista Signorini, the choreographer was Angolo Ricci and the costumes and scenery were designed by Giulio Parigi The festivities began in the Piazza Santa Croce with the entry of QUEEN LUCINDA on a chariot, accompanied by 64 actors and a choir of 164 Indians. After theis marched an army conducted by King Indamoro (COSIMO DE' MEDICI). LORENZO DE' MEDICI, as King of Melinda, commanded the army of the enemies attended by elephants and the chariot of Africa. The performance began with a ballet, symbolizing a battle, which was ended by Mars and Venus. Later, the whole cortège moved through the main roads of Florence.
