FLOWN ON GEMINI 11 – Cloth mission emblem, 1966. A mission emblem flown on Gemini 11 and given to Gordon Cooper by fellow Gemini astronaut Charles Conrad. The emblem features a gold Roman number "XI" rising from the Earth, leaving a white contrail behind. The mission’s objectives are illustrated by a docked Gemini spacecraft and an Agena vehicle with the large elliptical gold stitched orbit representing the high altitude orbit planned for this flight. A tethered spacewalking astronaut symbolizes Richard Gordon’s planned EVAs. The crew member’s last names are at the bottom in white thread. The emblem is displayed on a SIGNED provenance letter from Gordon COOPER, which reads: " We carried a few extra of our own mission 'patches' on the Gemini 5 flight as did later crews on their flights during the Gemini program. Pete carried a few like this one below on the Gemini XI flight during September 12 through 15, 1966. He and Richard Gordon docked with an Agena target vehicle and used its large rocket engine to establish a new world high altitude record of 850 miles. Richard did a couple of spacewalks on the flight too. Pete had one of the most distinguished careers of any astronaut. Not only did he fly two Gemini missions, he was the third man to walk on the Moon during Apollo 12 in 1969 then commanded the first Skylab mission in 1973. ” Cloth emblem, 3 by 4.25 inches. [With:] Color photograph, Conrad and Gordon exiting the crew suiting trailer as they headed toward the launch pad, 10 by 8 inches. Archivally matted to 12.5 by 19.5 inches.
