AN UNCOMMON ILLUSTRATED EDITION of Folengo's macaronic poetry. Girolamo Folengo, the most famous of macaronic poets, was born in Mantua and became a Benedictine monk, taking the name Teofilo. His long burlesque-heroic poem Opus macaronicum is written in macaronic (which uses Latinised vernacular words in a Latin text), under the pseudonym Coccaio and has as its hero Baldus, whose followers are the giant Fracassus and the wily Cingar; the work swiftly became popular and Folengo's contemporary Rabelais modelled Panurge in part on Cingar.
