By repute, Captain Martin is riding a winner of the Cesarewitch Handicap. The winners are seldom if ever bred from so he is out hunting, and presumably he had been given to Captain Martin, who may have been a part owner. Captain Martin's dress and bearing indicate that he is probably an ex-cavalry officer - by the length of the horse's tail the painting is from the late 1800s. The Cesarewitch Handicap is a flat handicap horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It is run at Newmarket over a distance of 2 miles and 2 furlongs (3,621 metres) and finishes on the Rowley Mile. It is scheduled to take place each year in October. Tacking margins beginning to fail. Small tears and punctures across the canvas. Pronounced stretcher bar marks. Craquleure pattern is leading to flaking in many areas. Scattered small paint losses across surface. Some wear and abrasion, notably in the horse. Loose in the frame. Yellowed varnish.
