Title: For Whom the Bell Tolls Author: Hemingway, Ernest Place: New York Publisher: Scribners Date: 1940 Description: Beige cloth, dust jacket. First Edition, First Issue jacket without photographers name on rear panel. Presentation copy inscribed on front free endpaper to his father-in-law: "For Paul M. Pfeiffer in sincere admiration. Ernest Hemingway". Hemingway married his second wife, Pauline Pfeiffer, in 1927 and the pair were frequent guests at the Pfeiffer home in Piggott, Arkansas. Hemingway is believed to have written For Whom the Bell Tolls, portions of A Farewell to Arms, and other works during lengthy stays with his wife's family. Ernest and Pauline were divorced less than a month following the publication of For Whom the Bell Tolls and he would marry Martha Gellhorn (to whom the present volume is dedicated) just a few weeks later, perhaps explaining the brevity of the inscription. An important association copy. Lot Amendments Condition: Jacket chipped at edges, heavier chipping at spine ends and at ends of flap folds; spine stamping a bit worn and faded, stain on front cover cloth, stain on lower edge of page block; else very good. Item number: 203146
