FORSTER, Johann Georg Adam (1754-94). Strödde underrättelser om Capitaine Cooks sista resa och olcyckeliga död i söderhafwet . Translated by Anders Sparrman. Stockholm: P.A. Brodin, 1781. Small 8° (177 x 102mm). Folding engraved map at end. (Lower outer corner of C8 repaired, map with long but clean closed tear, B4-C1 with light, unobtrusive waterstain in lower margin, light, mainly marginal soiling, a few spots.) Modern wrappers, cloth box with leather label on spine. Provenance : R D[avid] P[arsons] (booklabel). SCARCE, FIRST EDITION IN SWEDISH of Forster’s article 'Fragmente über Capitain Cooks lezte Reise und sein Ende’ (first published in Göttingisches Magazin in 1780), ‘which was of the earliest authentic and substantial account of … [Cook’s last] voyage to be printed’ (Parsons Collection 126). The map of the North Pacific was added by Sparrman (1748-1820), who had accompanied Forster on Cook’s second voyage, and is drawn and engraved by himself. It is ‘one of the very first to show the Hawaiian Islands, published in the same year as the world map identified by Fitzpatrick ( Early Mapping of Hawaii , p.11) as the earliest published map to include the islands’ (Parsons Collection). Sparrman added several pages of his own reflections on Cook’s death, and a brief account of the second voyage. Beddie records only the Mitchell Library copy in Australia; Forbes adds only Sir Joseph Banks’ copy at the British Library and a copy at the John Carter Brown Library. Beddie 1639, 2438; Forbes 30; Parsons Collection 126.
