Four miniatures, illuminated manuscripts on vellum 4 miniatures, (a) two painted miniatures, each 235mm. by 165mm., one portraying an ancient or mythological battle scene, with the slaughter of barbarians by an army on horseback, all before a town and an estuary, and another a legendary scene in which a group of sailors discover the body of a richly clothed woman in her coffin at sea, all before the mouth of a river and a town and within elaborate coloured border heightened with liquid gold, some minor worm damage suggesting that they were cut from an album of similar miniatures, and flaking from border of one, in elaborate moulded frames (now with loss in some places) with German sale tickets of early twentieth century pasted on reverse over earlier nineteenth century tickets of 'Compte d'Estampes, 12 Rue Pigalle', with coat-of-arms, Germany or Austria, early eighteenth century; (b) two painted miniatures, each 135mm. by 100mm., one portraying St. Francis, tonsured and dressed in monastic habit, kneeling and touching his heart, in a rocky landscape before an open book, a skull and a crucifix, and another St. George on horseback, spearing a dragon, as a princess kneels in prayer on top of a rocky outcrop behind him, laid down on silk backgrounds with elaborate silver wire designs overlaid, both slightly darkened at top, and small area of silver surround missing from lower part of St. George miniature, else in excellent condition, eighteenth or nineteenth century; all in presentable condition and framed
