Gold-tooled blue morocco, gilt edges, 19th-century London binding signed by M.M. Holloway (front free endpaper detached). Provenance : Baron Horace de Landau (d. 1901, Rothschild agent in Florence), with his bookplate (coronetted monogram). Bought in 1978 from Damms Antikvariat, Oslo (cat. 592, no. 181). VERY RARE FIRST GERMAN EDITION OF THE EARLIEST AND MOST IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF VOYAGE ACCOUNTS RELATING TO ASIA AND THE NEW WORLD. The correct version of the author/compiler's name, as well as his origins, is given by A. Pagano in Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani; he was a grammarian and cosmographer from Montalboddo (now Ostra in the province of Ancona), who signed a letter to the printer Aldus Manutius as "Franciscus Vitalis Bodianus tuus cognomento Francantianus." Montalboddo, as he is now commonly called, had his compilation first published in Italian at Vicenza (1507), with a decorative title from which the German design was almost precisely copied; a Latin edition was published in Milan the following year. The work has been called by the Brazilian bibliographer, Borba de Moraes, "not a jewel, [but] a cluster of jewels." ALL TEXTS IN THIS BOOK ARE OF THE GREATEST HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE. It includes accounts of Cadamosto's voyage to Cape Verde and Senegal, Pedro de Cintra's voyage to Senegal, Vasco da Gama's voyage to India, Pedro Alvares Cabral's voyage to India and his DISCOVERY OF BRAZIL, descriptions of Columbus's first three voyages and those of Alonso Niño and Pinzón, Giocondo's version of Vespucci's letter to Lorenzo de' Medici about his third voyage, the peace treaty between the Kings of Portugal and Calicut, letters on João da Nova's expedition and that of Gaspar Cortereal, the narrative by José Indio, the King of Portugal's letter to Pope Julius II about the Asian discoveries, and more.
