This lot features a collection of musical manuscripts and letters of composer Cesar Franck, one of the most celebrated figures in classical music of the late 19th century. The archive comes from Henry Expert, a student of Franck’s from approximately 1885 until the composer’s death in 1890. Included are musical manuscripts by Expert corrected by Franck, original musical manuscripts by Franck demonstrating correct composition and arrangement methods, and autograph letters of Franck to Expert and family. Highlights include: 1. Holograph Musical Manuscript of Henry Expert, in ink, 3 pp recto and verso, folio (conjoining leaves), n.p., [1888], “Achevement et coda d’un Canon circulaire (ending and coda of Bach’s Circular Canon for organ)," with additional melodic lines in pencil by Franck, final ten bars entirely in Franck’s hand. 2. Autograph Musical Manuscript of Frank on verso of student work, 1 p, quarto, n.p., [1888], “Deux examples de contrepoint fleuri, a 2 voix, sur le ‘Salve Regina,’ (Two examples of counterpoint for two voices, based on the chant 'Salve Regina')." 3. Autograph Musical Manuscript of Franck, 1 p, folio, n.p., [1890], “Etude de contre-sujet de fugue (Study on the subject of the fugue).” 4. Autograph Musical Manuscript of Expert, 2 pp, folio, n.p., n.d., “Achevement d’une exposition de fugue (End of the fugue episode),” with emendations and corrections by Franck. 5. Autograph Musical Manuscript by Expert, 8 pp recto and verso, folio, n.p., [1885], “Harmonizations de deux ariettes d’Alessandro Scarlatti (Harmonizations of two airs by Alessandro Scarlatti),” with emendations and additional manuscript pages of composition by Franck. 6. 12 Autograph Letters Signed (“Cesar Franck”), 27 pp recto and verso, 8vo (conjoining leaves), Paris, [1885-1890], to Henry Expert, Mme Victoria Expert, and Mme Alphose Conseil, a few with original autograph transmittal envelopes, regarding lessons and concerts. Mme Conseil is Henry Expert’s mother; Franck communicates with the entire family regarding the musical education of Henry. With printed broadside of a “Concert populaire” featuring Franck’s music, November 20, 1887. See illustration.
