Provenance : Pennsylvania Historical Society (bookplate and release stamp); early ownership signature on title page removed. FIRST EDITION. The first extensive collection of the writings of the Quaker Thomas Chalkley, who died in 1741 while preaching in the West Indies. He requested in his will that the Philadelphia Yearly meeting edit and print his work, directing his executors "to sell as much of my Wood Land as will defray the Charge of Printing and Binding." Chalkley's Works was reprinted in both the colonies and London several times during the eighteenth century, becoming "staple reading in Quaker families on into the nineteenth century" (Miller). Whittier alludes to Chalkley's work in his poem, "Snowbound." Evans 6297; Howes C-262; Miller 463.
