FREDERICK ALBERT COOK (1865-1940) Through the First Antarctic Night 1898-1899. A narrative of the voyage of the "Belgica" among newly discovered lands and over an unknown sea about the South Pole . New York: J.J. Little & Co. for Doubleday & McClure Co., 1900. 8° (227 x 148mm.). Photogravure portrait, coloured frontispiece, 75 leaves of plates (3 coloured), numerous illustrations. (Stitching loose.) Original light-tan moiré silk, upper cover blocked in gilt, black, white and red, spine titled in gilt, t.e.g. (spine browned and slightly rubbed). PROVENANCE: John L. Kaser, Trenton, N.J. (early inscription). FIRST EDITION, 'AUTHOR'S SIGNED EDITION' LIMITED TO 1,000 SIGNED COPIES, THIS NUMBER 58. 'His narrative is certainly one of the finest and most interesting from any Antarctic expedition' (Rosove) and the first to contain an extensive photographic record of the region. Although Rosove describes the binding as being 'light greenish-blue' in colour, the colour of the present copy corresponds to the Taurus copy. Rosove 76.A1b 'scarce'; Taurus 19. [ With :] F.A. COOK. First edition published in England, variant binding (not recorded by Rosove) with no publisher's device on lower board and publisher's name on spine in sans-serif caps. Conrad p.85; cf. Original dark grey cloth, blocked in white, lettered in gilt. First edition in German. F.A. COOK. 1 page autograph letter signed, to 'My Dear Myecleff', 670 Brunswick Ave., Brooklyn New York, 15 December 1902, inviting Myecleff and his wife for supper, 'I think it is in order for us to exchange polar and matrimonial experiences. Don't you?' (creased, small section of upper corner torn away). (4)
