Beschreibung:

Freud, SigmundAutograph letter signed from Freud to Sandor Radó, dated 1 February 1937, ending Radó's position with their journal
1 page (288 x 228 mm). In German, "Prof. Dr. Freud" letterhead, with original envelope, addressed in Freud's hand; old folds, slight soiling and two short closed tears to envelop.
Freud negotiation the transatlantic editorship of Internationale Zeitschrift für Psychoanalyse
In the present letter, Freud states that Radó has not answered him directly, giving the requested "yes" or "no" as to whether he sees any value (in light of the current circumstances) in his being named editor of their journal. Freud goes on to note that Radó's silence has not made his decision easy. He uses this opportunity to explain that he has had to weigh up Radó's earlier contributions against his current position and views, namely those surrounding his colleagues in Vienna. Freud concludes that his decision has been guided by the fact that he Radó has not altered his opinions concerning his Vienna colleagues, and that as editor of the journal, he is informing Radó that the editorial committee should do without his services from this point forward.
While this letters—and those leading up to it—suggest a deterioration in Freud's relationship with Radó, this was perhaps a temporary situation, particularly when one considers the ways in which Radó spread Freud's work through America. Indeed, because of his leadership at the New York Psychoanalytical Institute, in 1944 Radó won the approval of Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons to establish a graduate school of psychoanalysis, marking the first time psychoanalysis was taught in a university in the United States.
