FRÉZIER, Amédée François (1682-1773). Relation du voyage de la Mer du Sud aux côtes du Chily et du Perou . Paris: Nyon, Didot, Quillau, 1732. Second edition of Frézier’s important account of his voyages to South America. Commissioned by the French government to chart the western coast of South America, the author brought back significant scientific as well as geographic information about Chile, Peru and the wider region. First published in 1716, this edition is the first to include the reply to the criticisms of Father Louis Feuillée and a chronology of the viceroys of Peru. Hill 655; Sabin 25925. Quarto (251 x 182mm). 37 engraved maps, views and natural history plates, of which 18 folding, engraved headpiece and initial (some light spotting and browning, a few plaints slightly stained, occasional small wormtracks mostly confined to upper margin). Contemporary polished calf, red morocco spine label gilt-lettered, spine gilt (minor repair to upper joint). Provenance : ‘L.B.C. 1744’ (label on pastedown) – evidence of removed bookplate on front pastedown.
