Hand-carved cane, 35 in. ln., 1.5 in. ferrule; wonderfully carved with American eagles, Union Corps badges, an arrow, GAR medal, knife, violin, turtle, and a bird with a dog perched on its back, the dog incised with the name W.N. Luce. Some of the carvings retain their polychrome coloring. A search for a Civil War soldier named W.N. Luce shows a William N. Luce who enlisted as a private in Co. The regiment fought at the Second Battle of Bull Run, and was also engaged at Rappahannock, Sulphur Springs, and Gainesville, among other battles. Another William N. Luce was discovered, who enlisted as a private, serving with Co. D of the 6th U.S. Cavalry., which was organized in August 1861, and took part in 16 major and minor campaigns including the battle of Antietam, Fredericksburg, the Second Battle of Winchester, Battle of Fairfield, which was part of the Gettysburg Campaign, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, and the Appomattox Campaign.
